Atlantic Ocean: from Tenerife to Gibraltar

Atlantic Ocean

Trip description:

We start in the south of Tenerife and sail, if the wind allows, directly towards Gibraltar. However, most of the time we have northeast winds on this route, so that is rather rare. This means that with northeast winds, we sail as far north as possible, with an overnight stop in Madeira, until Gibraltar is more or less abeam and we can turn eastward. Then we enter the Strait of Gibraltar. A definitely noteworthy and remarkable spot with all the freighters and tankers rushing through. But also, the currents there are quite strong!

One main and two counter-currents can make the passage tricky depending on wind and weather. Also, it's important to watch out for orcas and fishing nets that are still encountered along the Moroccan coast even 25-30 miles offshore. The Bay of Gibraltar with all the ships at anchor, the Rock of Gibraltar, and La Linea is definitely worth seeing.

Around us, nothing but deep blue water. We are exposed to the forces of nature.

The wind in the sails propelling the boat swiftly and steadily forward. The unobstructed view to the horizon. The swell lifting the boat up and down. The sound of the sea. Unique sunsets that can only be experienced at sea.

The communal dinner from the galley before the boat becomes quiet and the night watches begin. During the night watch, the starry sky above us with the countless stars of the Milky Way. The relief of the watch change, and then off to bed. Or experiencing the sunrise during the last watch. First, the almost imperceptible dawn on the horizon and then the moment when the sun rises, and you immediately feel its power and warmth. When the scent of coffee permeates the boat and the crew gathers for breakfast, bringing life back into the boat, it's something special.

And when after several days at sea land finally comes into view again, and then in the harbor, enjoying a mooring beer and a long hot shower with the crew... those are the moments you don't forget.

Do you want to join this adventure? Then please consider the following: ->

As this is an offshore voyage, you should definitely have sea legs and have your own foul weather gear. Night watches are essential on these voyages. Some sailing experience should also be available. This trip is definitely NOT for beginners who have no experience and have never been on the open sea before, but rather for those who may still need miles for their SKS or Swiss offshore license, etc.

The specified duration of the voyage is essentially "variable" due to the distances involved, as it can go faster or slower depending on wind and weather for longer distances. That means, with unfavorable winds, we may have to tack or make longer legs and cannot sail directly on course. This naturally increases the distance and duration of the voyage. Conversely, it can also go better than planned, so that we may arrive 1-2 days earlier than planned. Therefore, we recommend that you only book your return flight when it is really foreseeable when we will reach our destination port.
